The village of Marnay-sur-Seine with its' 230 inhabitants is located between the banks of the river Seine and the old transport canal, 110kms South East of Paris in the region of Champagne Ardenne. Conveniently nestled at the cross roads of the Champagne region, the Parisian region of Ile de France, and Burgundy participants to camac programmes can benefit from the French countryside without being cut off the cosmopolitan richness of Paris. Marnay-sur-Seine belongs to the department of Aube (meaning Sunrise). This area's main resources come from agriculture and tourism. Nogent-sur-Seine, the closest business centre, has a Modern Art Museum and all shopping conveniences. The city of Provins, renowened for it's medieval heritage monuments and Architecture is 20 kms from Marnay. Troyes, another important city full of museums, and historical landmarks is only 50 kms away. The atmosphere is tranquil and isolated. Suitable for contemplation and creative thinking has always been one of the subtle strengths of Marnay-sur-Seine.

Nomadic creators in quest of inspiration have always frequented this village. Initially, the site was a refuge for the founding monks of St-Denis Royal Abbey, running from persecutions (859 after JC). In the 12th century, the first church was built, and then almost entirely destroyed in the 16th century as a result of religious wars. Since then, Marnay-sur-Seine's architecture and serene atmosphere have gone through wars and revolutions with few interruptions to it's landmarks. With the passing centuries, a tradition of harmony confronting adversity has perpetuated on the banks of the river Seine.

With a long history of creativity and everlasting renewal the artistic adventure of the village begins in the 20th century with Claude Domec, who used in his paintings elements from his childhood universe and discovery of this village (swims, walks in the fields, bargees' boats full of hay, lights, water). His surrealist friends were also seduced by the village, they came from Paris by the car loads with picnic baskets, brushes and oils, and laughter. Desnos with Foujita and the famous model Youki who bathed naked in the Seine scandalising local people. Henri Filipacchi, following the Domecs, fell under the charm of this village and the 17th century Priory where camac is presently located. Filipacchi was the inventor of the first pocket book. His son, Daniel along with Frank Ténot then continued and developed along the book Printing and Music tradition. Two young men with dreams and hopes, and an imagination that matched their financial savvy. We are in the 60s, the radio duo Frank Ténot / Daniel Filipacchi is a success, the old priory of Marnay is alive and significant within the jazz music and radio industry. Limousines drive through the gates every weekend…Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday…a glimpse of even a rock star. This property with it's enclosed garden walls, protected from the exterior, is a curiosity for the village inhabitants who were at during this decade and the next two to come, physically close but not involved. camac is presently located in this ancient priory, the doors are always open to the public now, it is a part of this village and as we can best hope for- also a part of the people who live here. camac organises various public events through out the year.
